The Adornment Design Of The Song Dynasty “Shengse Flower” And Innocative Design Applications

During my post graduate study,I was fortunate enough to follow my tutor to conduct theresearch on ancient Chinese clothing patterns and the application of traditional patterns and modern design.I was deeply attracted by the traditional Chinese culture and willing to further study traditional Chinese patterns.Under the guidance of my tutor,I made the traditional pattern research and design application the research topic of my postgraduate study,and fixed on the research and design application of decorative pattern "Shengse Flower" of Song Dynasty.Through a deep research and design application of the representative patterns,I hope to present the characteristics and implications of the decorative patterns in Song Dynasty,and to understand more about the culture of Song Dynasty.Finally,based on the study of decorative patterns in Song Dynasty,I hope to create some design works featuring a perfect combination of modern design and the traditional decorative patterns.The artistic culture of song Dynasty bears a prominent status in Chinese history,that's why the topic of my pattern research during postgraduate study is fixed on Song dynasty.Historian Chen Yinque used to say that "the culture of the Huaxia nationality has evolved over thousands of years,and it reached its peak of perfection in the Song Dynasty." According to Western and Japanese historians,however,the Song Dynasty could be seen as the Renaissance and economic revolution in Chinese history.Given the results of a comprehensive study of historical studies,it is not difficult to find that the economic prosperity of Song Dynasty was unprecedented,with significant advance in areas of agriculture,printing,paper making,silk,porcelain making,navigation and shipbuilding industry.Overseas trade was also well developed in Song Dynasty,with more than 50 countries in the South Pacific,Middle East,Africa and Europe establishing commercial relations with China.The large-scale development of the South at that time contributed to the southward migration of economic center.Based on such historical context,this article conducts a research on the popular pattern “Shengse Flower” appeared in Song Dynasty and explores its design application.The so-called "Shengse Flower" refers to the realistic Zhezhi flower decorative patterns appeared under the influence of flower-and-bird paintings in the imperial art academy of Song Dynasty,it is also known as "Shengse Zhezhi Flower." "Zhezhi" was originally one of the manifestation forms of Chinese flower-and-bird paintings,which only depicted part of the branches and flowers in the paintings.In the art history of China,“Zhezhi”started from mid-Tang to late Tang Dynasty and became commonly seen in the Five Dynasties,as of Song Dynasty,it has turned into one of the most common forms of composition applied by flower-and-bird painters.This kind of development and change was closely related to the aesthetic taste that was different from that of other dynasties in Song Dynasty.There was also a saying in the field of pattern study: “Baoxiang of Tang Dynasty and Shengse of Song Dynasty”."Shengse Flower" patterns pay attention to the realistic description of flowers instead of a simple sketch from nature.In the process of presenting,they emphasize more on the law of growth and spatial density between flowers and leaves,pursue a well-distributed state on the layout rather than simply repetition or connection,so as to create a sense of freedom and harmony of order.The "Shengse Flower" pattern itself is a perfect embodiment of the literati thinking,as well as the design concept of a perfect combination of art and life.How to make a great integration of the "Shengse Flower" patterns and the contemporary design has become the focus and innovation point of my research.In the end,on the basis of the research and contemporary design language,I hope to work out some design works with a perfect combination of traditional culture and contemporary design,explore the integration possibility of the “Shengse Flower” patterns and contemporary design,as well as to develop and expand our traditional culture.
