This thesis is a translation report based on Educating China: Knowledge,Society and Textbooks in Modernizing World,1902-1937(hereinafter referred to as "Educating China"),Peter Zarrow’s latest academic work on the history of thought. This book mainly studies the development of national ideology in China influenced by the primary and secondary education in the period of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, taking the textbooks in primary and secondary school during this period as historical materials for research. The purpose of translating this book bases on two reasons.Firstly, sinologist’s study on the thought of history will provide the references in relevant studies in China and help Chinese to better understand the development of ideology in this period.Secondly, this project is expected to inspect and improve the translator’s translating skill and bilingual abilities through finding and solving difficulties in the course of translation. This translation report presents the translation practice and the translator’s reflection on finding and solving difficulties.Based on the preciseness and objectivity of the academic work and the requirements of target language readers, the translator chooses Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation as the theoretical basis.Under the guidance of Newmark’s theories, the translator takes great efforts to reproduce the content of the source text and to maintain the original language styles,so as to make the target language readers resonate with the source language readers. In order to solve the difficult translation in terminologies, long and complex sentences, the translator adopts literal translation, back translation, free translation, combination, division, the change of the word order, the change of the voice and amplification at lexical, syntactical and textual level.
