Study On U.S.-Saudi Relationship In The Post-Cold War Era

As an important energy and religious power in the Middle East,Saudi Arabia's relations with U.S.are attracting more and more academic attention.Saudi Arabia is a theocratic monarchy,while the United States is a democratic country,the two countries are different in terms of ideology and political system.However,the US and Saudi Arabia have maintained good relations of cooperation since 1930s.The long-term cooperation across the differences is worth exploring in depth.The US and Saudi Arabia established diplomatic relations in 1933.At that time,Saudi Arabia has just been independent and faced serious security threat.Due to the impact of the global economic crisis,the early Saudi economy was also severely hit by the reduction of pilgrims.As an emerging power,the US began to cooperate with Saudi Arabia in the field of energy and established a "oil-for-security" diplomatic model in the World War II.U.S.-Saudi maintained cooperation to atheist Soviet Union during the Cold War.The US strengthened its position in the Middle East after the Cold War.And in return,Saudi Arabia supported US in Persian Gulf War,the war in Iraq and the field of anti-terrorism,the two countries continued to deepen comprehensive cooperation.Despite the problems of Arab-Israeli problems,democratic reform and terrorist attacks,U.S.-Saudi have always been able to put the common interests of the two countries in the first place.US-dominated and across time and space are the main traits of the special relations and which is closely linked with the American political culture of pragmatism.This paper analyzes the evolution of the relationship between United States and Saudi Arabia and the pragmatism in politic culture of the US.Considering historical context,the article focuses on grasping the strategic considerations and political cooperation that affect bilateral relations and describing the significant historical events.Based on a review of US-Saudi relations,showing the particularity.The origin of pragmatism and its influence on American diplomacy is the focus of this article.
