Since the 21 st century, the fact that global warming is mounting and the thickness of the sea ice and the number of glacier are decreasing, which make the scientific inspection, resources exploration and opening up of new sailing routes toward the Arctic have realistic significance. The Arctic's geo-strategic position has improved, causing competition of neighboring countries for resources and spaces in the Arctic. The demarcation of the outer continental shelf in the Arctic is a manifest.Being the hottest issue, the demarcation of the outer continental shelf in the North Pole has become a hot spot of the international community, because it directly relates to the integrated governance of the region and the interests of the whole word. However,in what ways to regulate and govern the demarcation has become the core subject of the Arctic issue.Currently, regulating the demarcation issue through international maritime law is the most practical path. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea which adopted in 1982 is the most authoritative and overall international regulation dealing with the ocean demarcation issue, what's more, the geographical character in the Arctic is majorly covered by the Arctic Ocean, therefore, the international legal regime characterized by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea has irreplaceable rationality to regulate the demarcation issue.During the practice, how to reasonably regulate the demarcation issue by the maritime law system and resolve the potential problems and difficulties needs our deep thinking and studying. The demarcation issue is inalienable to the major contradictions faced by the North Pole, the three pairs of major ones, being the background of the demarcation issue, are between countries inside the Pole, between countries inside and outside the Pole, and between resources exploration and interests of the natives.Meanwhile,in the face of the major contradictions, the conflicts of the outer continental shelf in the Arctic are caused by several factors. And these factors directly or indirectly cause the complex demarcation issue today.Facing such complicated problem, the application of the maritime law offers scientific and practical opportunities to the concrete governance and practice of the demarcation issue.Current international law regime represented by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea has important guidance to regulate the demarcation issue. However, from some extent,we need to recognize that there are still some shortcomings and flaws in the current international law regime represented by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea concerning some regulation items and procedures, which may offer chances for the countries to pursue interests by utilizing them, and even cause more complicated geographical situation. From a long term, exploring a more reasonable and systematic maritime law regime and regulating the demarcation issues with scientific, rigorous and efficient law procedure have remarkable and profound significance to achieve the coordination of all countries' interests and effective protection of the North Pole's public position.
