An Analysis On Singapore's Political Development

Singapore has set its path to “Singapore's Democracy” according to practice of the nation under the leadership of People's Action Party since the foundation of the state.The democratic elements,including constitutional government system,party politics,election mechanism,rule of law,civil society and civil rights have built up the democratic foundation and principle frame of “Singapore's Democracy”.The Establishment and development of “Singapore's Democracy” was a gradual process and it was injected into different features under different generations of leadership.Economic globalization and western democratization are the external dynamic factors to the development of Singapore's politics.While among the internal dynamic factors,many dimensions work together.Specificly,the objective requirement of economic development is the economic factor,establishment and development of Singapore's Democracy is the political factor,combination of western-eastern culture is the cultural factor,the rise of civil society and democratic participation are the social factors and different generations of leadership is the individual factors,such as Lee Kuan Yew,Goh Chok Tong and Lee Hsien Loong.All the dynamic factors interact and contact with each other,making up a dynamic mechanism for political progress in Singapore.Political development of Singapore has formed its main characters of continuity,progressivity,pluralism,autonomy and pragmatism in the long-term practice.Singapore has injected Confucian spiritual connotation into the western representative democracy in the background against integration of western and eastern culture,deriving a core system of "Singapore's Democracy".It is composed of common social values,the "good government" governed by "gentleman",a circular interaction among politics,economy and social and a mass democracy served for all people.2015 general election had a profound effect on Singapore's political development.Singapore's party politics became more stable and moderate under the competence between People's Action Party and the Opposition.The election changed Singapore's political culture,which focused on suffering consciousness,updated notions about talent selection and gradually matured political rationality.After the election,Singapore started up a new reformation on political system for the process of political institutionalization.There are a few challenges in political development after Singapore entering in the new century.In terms of political stability,the surf of western democratization has given rise to accusations of Singapore's democracy.The increasing power of opposite parties,middle class and civil society has brought lots of instable factors to Singapore's development.The selection of public servants has been affected by reducing civilian's salaries and strict law,which has put forward a higher requirement for political talented person.In terms of political system,many establishments are need to be better,including political election system,elected presidential system and power transition.Lastly,in terms of political effectiveness,growing multiple requirements from the mass has given much pressure to People's Action Party and the incapability of opposite party and Member of Parliament has affected on the promotion of effectiveness.In a word,the continuousness and institutionalization of a good government are the keys to keep a high political effectiveness.
