As an important theoretical thought since the birth of the United States,American Exceptionalism has always been a hot topic for many scholars. It is even applied as an excuse for American hegemonism and expansionism.Meanwhile, the United States is a typical capitalist state, and it holds a hostile attitude toward the socialist system. Not only is there no socialism within the country, but also its foreign policy towards socialist countries has remained hostile and in containment. Why does the United States oppose the socialist system? Does the American cognition on socialism is related to the idea of exceptionalism? The thesis is to explore the origin of American cognition on socialism based on American Exceptionalism theory and to analyze the faults with such cognition.Through the literature research method and the comparative research method, the thesis is both to analyze the related literatures to reveal the nature of the events, and to explore the internal relations between American Exceptionalism theory and American cognition on socialism, and the real intention behind such cognition.Firstly, the thesis discusses the contents of American Exceptionalism, including the factors in religion, culture, economy and political party system. Then, the comparison has been made between the exceptionalism factors and the corresponding socialist factors,in order to analyze and find faults on these “superior” factors.Next, the researcher explores the twists the socialist movement had experienced in the United States and the reasons for its failure based on American Exceptionalism, exposing that American socialism is not an exception, but a modified socialism that conforms to the law of Marx's sociology development. In the end, through the analysis of the United States foreign policy towards the Soviet Union and Vietnam after World War II,the researcher concludes that on the surface of “noble” sense of mission in American Exceptionalism, the United States' real purpose is to achieve hegemonism and expansionism ambitions, globally.Through expounding the contradiction between American creeds and socialism from the perspective of American Exceptionalism, and the reason for the United States' hostility towards socialism from both the domestic and foreign policies, the thesis probes into a more profound source for the American anti-socialist tradition, which provides a theoretical guidance for the socialist countries to oppose the relevant foreign policies of the United States.
