As a basic and necessary skill in English learning, reading always plays an important role not only in textbooks but also in examinations. Experts and teachers have been paying close attention to reading teaching for many years. The schema theory mentioned in this paper is one of the theories which have a great effect on English reading teaching.Guided by the schema theory and the reading theory, the author does some research on the application of the schema theory to English reading teaching in senior high schools through several methods such as observing, analysing, questionaire surveying and interviewing, points out the deficiencies and gives advice according to the results with the hope that this study will help the schema theory play a greater role in actual teaching.Curriculum standards guide teaching. College entrance examinations direct teaching. Textbooks are the basis for teaching. So, combining the schema theory, the author analyses these three parts above in preliminary study.To make the result universal, the author watches videos of demonstration classes and uses the schema theory to analyse its application in classroom teaching. To study from different angles for a persuasive result, during the internship in Nanjing Foreign Language School, the author analyses reading sections from mid-term paper and final paper of Senior One, sends questionaires to students and invites the adviser to do an interview to collect the information about the application status of the schema theory in daily teaching.The research result shows that in the current teaching of senior English reading, language schema is paid closest attention to, content schema needs more attention and form schema often gets overlooked. Besides, teachers' theoretical level needs improving.Conclusions above enlighten us that in actual teaching we should keep leading students to lay a solid foundation to language basic knowledge, help them to read more to enrich their content schema, make full use of form schema and update teachers' structure of knowledge through training programs.
