Developing senior high school students' English learning autonomy is a goal set by the Ordinary High School English Curriculum Standard(Experimental Version),while students' autonomy in reading accounts for a large part of students' autonomous English learning ability.Taking into consideration the fact that senior high school students' acquiring of autonomous English reading ability directly relates to their English achievement and long-term personal development,it is a must that these students' autonomous reading ability be analyzed,problems be investigated and solutions be proposed.This study,guided by the Curriculum Standard,probes into the autonomous English reading ability of senior one students from a senior high school in Zhangzhou.The result of the survey shows that in general,senior school students' autonomous reading motivation,reading resources,reading strategies and intercultural awareness are at a relatively low level,which is far from meeting the requirements of the Curriculum Standard.The study also reveals that students' autonomous reading ability not only has a significant positive correlation with their English test scores but acts as a strong predictor for the latter.Further analysis indicates that students' language incompetence,teachers' and students' negligence of autonomous reading,teachers' outdated teaching methods and insufficient cross-cultural literacy are to blame for students' poor autonomous reading performance.Several countermeasures are proposed to solve the problems stated above: intensify reading assignments and combine in-class reading with extracurricular reading;restore English reading class to its complete form,and foster students' interest in reading;strengthen reading strategies teaching and pay more attention to textbooks;teachers must improve their own comprehensive quality;teachers should take different teaching approaches to students of different language competence;integrate teaching resources to navigate students on the use of the Internet.
