One of the important aspects of English learning is the ability of reading.At present,high scores in English reading comprehension shows that it is important.However,the efficiency of the teaching of English reading is low.Therefore,in view of the unsatisfied situation,this research proposes a teaching method based on the application of Multiple Intelligence Theory to the teaching of English reading.Multiple Intelligence Theory was put forward by Howard Gardner,the professor of Harvard University in 1983.According to the theory of Multiple Intelligences,everyone has eight kinds of intelligences and each of them does not exist independently.They influence each other and combine in different ways to solve problems.As a result,this theory focuses on promoting the all-round development of students according to their individual differences.What's more,it follows the requirements of the new English Curriculum Standard promulgated in 2011.This study aims to testify the effect of application of Multiple Intelligence Theory to the teaching of English reading.The author selects two classes of Grade 9 of the affiliated middle school of Henan Normal University,totally 121 students,as the research subjects.One is the experimental class to which the author gives English reading class based on Multiple Intelligence Theory and the other is the control class taught in a traditional way.Then the author testifies what the effect of Multiple Intelligence Theory to English reading teaching is by using questionnaires,classroom observation,interviews and cases study to and testifies whether it can improve students' interest and reading proficiency effectively with the help of Multiple Intelligence Theory in the teaching of English reading.The results of the study show that teaching of English reading based on Multiple Intelligence Theory can effectively promote students' learning interest and their academic performance.It also has a positive influence on teaching.This research can help teachers apply Multiple Intelligence Theory in English reading class effectively and help them to understand the diversity of students' intelligence distribution.Therefore,great attention will be attracted to the differences of students so that teachers can create classroom activities according to students' aptitude and different needs.At the same time,this study also promotes the application of Multiple Intelligence Theory in China and provides a certain reference for the research of this field.
