Reading is an important way of language input and also an important teaching content of the English curriculum standards in force in the ordinary junior middle school.But at present,there exist many problems in the English reading teaching in junior middle school.In the process of English reading teaching,the teachers pay too much attention to the analysis of language points and grammar but ignore to develop the students’ language using ability,which makes the English class uninteresting and boring.From a long-term point of view,this is not conducive to develop the students’ reading potential.The English Curriculum Standards issued in 2011 emphasizes that the all-round development of students is the goal and motivation of English teaching.Therefore,how to effectively motivate the students’ reading interest and improve the students’ English reading ability are the questions that every English teacher must consider.This study focuses on developing students’ English reading skills after referring to relative literatures on the study of the Multiple Intelligences Theory(MIT)and English reading teaching at home and abroad.This paper elaborates the Multiple Intelligences(MI)concept,pointing out that normal people have a variety of independent intelligence,but different intelligence combinations and manifestations show differences.Therefore,teachers should design adaptive teaching activities based on students’ intelligence tendency to make every student learn something,letting them feel the happiness of success in the process of English reading teaching.The author designs a variety of activities to meet the different levels of the students’ needs in the pre-reading,while-reading and post-reading to provide good opportunities for the students developing MI.On the basis of studying the MIT,this study uses questionnaires to know the 120students’ English learning interest,reading level and their intelligences in Class 3,Class4,Grade Eight in Shihe Middle School in Xinyang.On the basis of this,the authordesigns the experiment and carry out the English reading teaching practice guided by the MIT for about three months.The purpose of the experiment is to test whether the English reading teaching practice under the guidance of the MIT is helpful to improve the students’ English learning interest,reading level and whether it can strengthen the students’ strong intelligences and improve their weak intelligences.After the experiment,the author uses the SPSS 20.0 to analyze the data collected and the author find that the English reading teaching under the guidance of the MIT is beneficial to the improvement of the students’ learning interest and reading ability.The result shows that the English reading teaching under the guidance of the MIT is beneficial to the improvement of the students’ learning interest and reading ability.This study will be helpful for the promotion of the MIT in our country and can help teachers to better understand the application of multiple intelligences in the classroom as well as the diversity of students’ intelligence.Thus teachers can design more flexible teaching activities to meet students’ different needs.And at the same time,this research provides a certain reference for the research of this field.
