Teaching assessment is an important part of modern English teaching so the scientific and comprehensive assessment system is the important guarantee to realize the curriculum goal.As one of the assessment methods,formative assessment is put forward for shortcomings of summative assessment.Formative assessment judges students according to their daily performance,achievements and emotional attitude.And its purposes are to promote students' learning,to help students regulate their learning process,to make students obtain learning confidence,to enhance students' learning interest and to promote the formation of cooperation spirit.Students change from passive roles to evaluators and participants.However,the theory and practice of related researches mainly concentrate on writing and reading class in universities and high schools,rarely involving listening class in middle schools.Therefore,the author introduces formative assessment to English listening teaching in middle schools.The subjects of this research are students from two classes in No.28 middle school and they are divided into the experimental class and the control class.The experiment lasts for four months.This thesis aims to explore applications of formative assessment in English listening class.The three research questions are as follows: 1)Can formative assessment stimulate students' interest of English listening? 2)Can formative assessment have a positive effect on cultivating students' autonomous learning ability? 3)Can formative assessment enhance students' English listening ability? The experiment adopts questionnaires,interviews and tests to collect and analyze the data in order to solve three questions above.There are five parts in this thesis.Chapter one is the brief introduction to research background,significance and the structure.Chapter two is literature review,which mainly introduces characteristics,tools and techniques,related theories and studies in English listening at home and abroad.Chapter three is mainly about how to implement formative assessment and detailed steps of the experiment.Chapter four is the analysis and discussion of the research data.The data is collected from questionnaires,interviews and tests.Chapter five concludes the major findings,implications,limitations and suggestions for the future study.The conclusions are that formative assessment can stimulate students' interest of English listening,can have a positive effect on cultivating students' autonomous learning ability and can enhance students' English listening ability.
