This report is focused on research of 'Hanja' learning influence in overall Korean language improvement and,taking into account the importance and necessity of learning 'Hanja',through understanding 'Hanja' learning program in the current Korean elementary education system,to select the appropriate nationwide 'Hanja'learning basis and further to establish 'Hanja' learning education system.For thousands of years,both Korean language and 'Hanja' have been used in our daily life and culture.Even when King Sejong distributed Hun-Min-Jeong-Eum,a modern Korean language,'Hanja' is still regarded as a pivotal part in our nation's literature and language life up to the modern times.For instance,more than 70%of Korean is using 'Hanja',which is reasonable enough in reality that 'Hanja' education is essential for our language.'Hanja' is a kind of globalized language,which is used by more than half of the world's population.Also most of Korean language vocabulary consists of Chinese character,thus,Korean language and Chinese character has an indivisible relationship.Korean ancestors left using 'Hanja' not only their history and classics with their thoughts and feelings,but countless number of literature and historical documents.So through literature research we can inherit our ancestor's thoughts and its essence,take out lessons and be optimal,thus,it can be the source of knowledge for future development of Korean society.Recently,the media announced that the Minister of Education decided to put Chinese characters within 300 words in grade 5 and 6 textbooks in elementary school from upcoming 2019.It is confirmed to use explanation to help understanding the terms in a separate space instead of using parallel writing way,which has been a controversy on December 30th in 2016.This has brought a growing attention on Chinese character recently.The number of candidates to take the 'Hanja' Rating Test increased dramatically and the number of related organizations are growing as well.We are living in an age of high industrialization,globalization,and specialization.It is urgently necessary to held Chinese character education in order to have an active economic exchange between major countries such as Korea,China and Japan play a pivotal role in East Asian politics,economy and culture.Recently,Korea has actively engaged in closer political diplomacy with China,and the trade volume is also increasing.Especially,cultural exchange becomes hard to be done properly without knowing Chinese characters in Asia.However,the use of Chinese characters keeps shrinking in Korea though.The reason is not only the existence of our own Korean language 'Hangul',but also due to the phenomenon of weak awareness of essentiality of 'Hanja' learning in the language policy.Apparently,the perception of recognizing of 'Hanja' and Chinese literature is higher than ever in current society and public education.In such an atmosphere the necessity of 'Hanja' education in elementary school has been continuously discussed.Therefore,I'd like to look further into the current status and necessity of why it should be done in elementary school.The Korean vocabulary consists of about 70%from Chinese characters,that's why it is effective to learn 'Hanja' during early ages since the meaning can be clearly understood by learning Chinese characters.In fact,the optimal age for language acquisition is usually pre-puberty ages of elementary school periods.It is because that human brain is much flexible at those times for learning other languages.So it is reasonable to be conduct from elementary school.This is the way to improve the understanding of Hangul,as learning Chinese characters along with Hangul from pre-puberty elementary school period.The elementary school period is the first step to deal with Chinese character,and it is difficult to understand the meaning of the text contents without knowing 'Hanja',since most of the current Korean vocabulary is composed of Chinese character.It is vital that 'Hanja' education should be done to enrich language life.Especially,considering that the most of the vocabulary in textbook is Chinese characters,such as when we meet the vocabulary used in mathematics,society and science of elementary school textbooks,which even used in professional way.Further,it would be better to teach a large amount of Chinese characters to elementary school students.The necessity of elementary school Chinese character education has been claimed by many scholars and relevant academics in the meantime.Additionally,many studies have been carried out for elementary school in order to conduct the Chinese character education,and the necessity becomes urgent.Currently,there are many schools that teach Chinese characters during school discretion time,morning tutorial time,etc.in elementary school.Practically,although it is recognized the necessity of actual Chinese character education and of teaching Chinese characters in many elementary schools,it has been difficult to adopt the regular Chinese language curriculum because of the excessive amount of regular subjects,also the lack of professional teachers,using various textbooks in schools and the problem on the administration,differences in the quality and level of education,incomplete learning motivation,lack of consistency of basic Chinese characters of elementary 'Hanja'education,and so on are obstacles to Chinese education in elementary school.Unlike the curriculum of middle and high schools,the Chinese character education of elementary schools,which actually need the most Chinese character education,is not hold a systematic education course,furthermore it is in a poor situation without fundamental Chinese characters for national education.It is a pity that there is no any remarkable action taken at the national level yet,although the academics and researchers have been pointed out the problems of the educational reality.Overall,Chinese character education should play an important role as a tool for teaching vocabulary and learning other subjects.Therefore,the future textbook of'Hanja' in elementary school should be improved by the vocabulary so as to understand when studying the text and recognize words which displayed in Chinese character while reading textbook,then to be able to accept various types of text critically and creatively.I would say that it is directly connected with the goal of Korean language department.In the 21st century,I hope that the language policy is renewed and the 'Hanja'education come true in elementary school to be able to educate Chinese characters and activate the 'Hanja' education in primary school.
