Due to the advance of English teaching reform,many scholars have focused on new teaching methods.However,many of them have given up applying recitation to their daily teaching,believing that reciting passages is rote learning.As a matter of fact,students' English learning ability cannot get improved without basic language skills.And it's difficult to form English language sense without enough recitation.The formation of English language sense and the improvement of English language skills are based on recitation.Therefore,this thesis attempts to provide statistic support for the effects of reciting excellent paragraphs on students' reading and writing abilities,and aims to find the way to apply recitation to daily English teaching from the perspective of the Input and Output Hypotheses.This thesis employed the empirical researches and questionnaires to work on the research questions.After we had chosen the control class and the experiment class,the experiment began with a questionnaire to see the students' attitudes towards recitation,reading and writing.Then,we enhanced reciting in the experiment class and used the middle-term examination as the middle test of the experiment and the final exam as the after-test.We collected the data and analyzed them by means of SPSS to further discuss the results.The major findings are listed as follows: 1)Recitation can help students gain more confidence in English learning.Through reciting excellent paragraphs,students' attitudes towards reciting are improved.2)Reciting excellent paragraphs can improve students' grades in cloze,reading comprehension and writing.Students' grades in writing get improved most significantly.Students' grades in reading comprehension get improved significantly.And reciting good paragraphs can affect students' grades in cloze positively after a longer time of reciting.Reciting excellent paragraphs can help improve students' ability to do cloze,reading comprehension and writing.Despite the findings,the research has its limitations.Firstly,this research lasted for only one term,which was a short period of time.If we could carry out the research for a longer time,the data would be more convincing.Also,the number of the subjects was so large that the teacher couldn't check all students' recitation and gave them directions in recitation individually.During this research,the writer found that different students' reading and writing ability improved differently.Whether recitation has similar effects on different English levels of students remains to be further researched.
