Cloze test plays a vital role in English test. The score of cloze accounts for 20 percent, which is a large proportion, of the whole NMET. Therefore, we cannot emphasize the importance of English cloze too much. The main aim of cloze is to reflect students' integrated English skills. Students are required to possess abundant vocabulary, solid grammatical foundation as well as a high level of reading ability. Furthermore, it is necessary for students to figure out useful information from the context within the limited time. Also, students are expected to develop holistic thinking and critical thinking in the process of accomplishing cloze. Besides, the ability of analyzing and solving problem in the cloze is greatly addressed.The proposition characteristics and requirements of English cloze determine that it is no use and no good analyzing a cloze text sentence by sentence. Therefore, senior high school teachers ought to concentrate on the whole passage instead of focusing on certain words, phrases or grammatical rules of the text. What's more, teachers are expected to explore a more appropriate teaching mode and method to guide students. On this level, this thesis is going to study how to improve students' ability to accomplish cloze better with the guide of Cohesion Theory.The key points of this thesis are:(1) what is the reason of Cohesion Theory being able to develop students' ability of accomplishing cloze better? (2) How to apply Cohesion Theory to improve students' ability to finish cloze better? (3)Is it effective to develop students' ability in cloze with the application of Cohesion Theory?To figure out the three questions, the thesis first introduces the influences of Cohesion Theory on cloze tests. The discussion towards teaching methods based on Cohesion Theory is also carried on. This part is to figure out the reason.The next part introduces a teaching empirical study which was conducted during September,2015 and January,2016. In this study, the experimental class received the training of cohesive devices, attempting to find out the way to develop students' ability of accomplishing cloze better.Based on the analysis of the collected data, it is suggested that teachers consciously guide the students to use the knowledge of Cohesion Theory to accomplish cloze tests, which can bring positive effects to senior high school students' attitudes towards the cloze test and improve the students' abilities to accomplish cloze better.
