Within the field of language testing,the cloze test has been extensively investigated from both theoretical and methodological perspectives.Cloze test,initially introduced by Taylor in 1953,and later,it gained importance as a good testing device,especially for testing the language proficiency of English learners.Cloze test is an important part of the English test and the cohesion theory plays an important role in cloze test.Hallidy and Hassan divide the cohesion theory into reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion,and lexical cohesion is divided into collocation and reiteration.To a certain degree,mastering cohesion theory which is involved in cloze test can help students a lot in doing cloze test,and this kind of knowledge can not be ignored.Although many researchers have studied the application of cohesion theory in cloze test from different perspectives,there are relatively few researches on the role that these five categories played in cloze test.And this article will study the cloze test in view of this problem.The subjects of the experiment are the students of senior three in No.1 middle school of Shuocheng District,and the author uses questionnaire,classroom observation and teaching experiment to explore the application of cohesion theory to English cloze test in senior high school,and puts forward some suggestions on the cloze test teaching in the future.In this paper,the following three problems are discussed:(1)Will the application of cohesion theory to cloze test teaching affect the senior high school students' performance?(2)If so,is there a significant difference in the impact of cohesion theory on students with different level of achievements?(3)What are the most important factors among cohesion theory that affect senior high school students' English cloze test scores?In the process of teaching experiment,by comparing and analyzing the scores of the subjects before and after the experiment,the final data shows that there is no significantdifference between the experimental group and the control group before the experiment,while there is a significant difference between them after the experiment,which shows that the application of the cohesion theory will affect the performance of senior high school students in doing cloze test.For students with different levels,namely,high,medium and low level,there are also significant differences in the impact of the cohesion theory on their performance.Moreover,for the medium level students,cohesion theory has the most significant impact on their performance.For the six factors in cohesion theory,conjunction,ellipsis and substitution are the most important factors among cohesion theory that affect senior high school students' English cloze test scores.The final results show that applying cohesion theory to high school cloze test teaching can significantly improve students' problem-solving ability.And for the different levels,the increase in students' achievements are also different,and the growth rate of students' achievements at medium level is the largest.In high school cloze test teaching,teachers should pay close attention to the main factors.This study proves that it is very effective to combine the cohesion theory and cloze test to improve the high school students' cloze test achievements.It is hoped that this study can enlighten the future teaching in cloze test.
