Reading takes an important place in the class of senior high schools.In the calss at senior high schools of Shenyang,teachers emphasize grammar points rather than teach students some new methods to deal with the reading items.Since the materials of students' textbooks contain different topics,it's important for teachers to find some suitable ways to teach reading according to the topics or different genres.In order to improve the efficiency of teaching English reading comprehension,this thesis deals with how to cultivate students' ability of reading.Thematic progression as one of the significant theories among those theories which has been applied in teaching English reading comprehension.It emphasizes the textual structure.In this study,thematic progression is adopted to teach English reading comprehension at a senior high school based on relevant research results.In the experiment,101 students were selected from two random classes.The experimental class carried on the thematic progression pattern whereas the controlled class still used the method which they had used before.The experiment lasted three months.The pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire were used to show the changes of students' attitude towards thematic progression especially when it was used in understanding different genres of reading materilas.The statistics showed that over 64% of students in experimental class thought thematic progression was helpful in understanding expositions and over 22% of students in experimental class considered that by using thematic progression into description,they could find the right answers.The text was designed to examine the effectiveness of thematic progression in English classroom in a senior high school.The data of pre-test and post-test were calculated and collected by the software SPSS 19.0,the mean score of the students in experimental class was 0.9 points higher than controlled class at the end of the experiment.
