English reading has always been the key point and difficulty of English learning and teaching in senior high schools.Most teachers,however,have adopted traditional English reading methods which focus on the presentation of words,phrases,grammar in the reading.There were many theories and models about reading which paid more attention to verbal system,such as the bottom-up model,the top-down model,the interactive model and schema theory.In the 1970 s Paivioproposeddual coding theory(DCT),which had two representational systems including verbal system and nonverbal system.Previous researchers have found DCT useful to improve the reading skills in first language classroom and seldom in second language classroom.This experimental study is mainly based on DCT,that is,an application of DCT in English reading in ×××Senior High School.The author designed and carried out this study with two questions: 1.Does dual coding theory have an effect on achievements of readingcomprehension? 2.In what aspects does Dual Coding Theory affect students' reading comprehension?Based on research questions above,the author chose 76 students in senior high school in Fushun City,Liaoning Province.The experimental class(EC)had 40 students and the control class(CC)included 36 students.During the experiment,the CC accepted regular reading training while the EC accepted imagery training in light of DCT.Both CC and EC had finished questionnaire,pre-test,post-testand interview.The first question was analyzed by using the pre-test and post-test in a quantitative way.And the second question was analyzed by analyzing the pre-test and post-test again and interview in both the quantitative and qualitative way.And the data the author had collected was analyzed by SPSS 17.According to the analysis of data,the author concluded that DCT has an effect on reading comprehension in senior high school.At the same time,DCT can affect students' reading skill especially in the main idea of reading comprehension.
