Reading,which plays a fundamental role in English learning,is one of the most important language skills that middle school students should master and those who master reading skills well will learn English faster and better.However,rigid grammar teaching,whose characteristics are teacher-centered and examination-oriented,still dominates the whole classroom,which will exhaust students,interest in English learning.In order to stimulate students' English reading interest and improve students'English reading performance,the author attempts to apply cooperative learning into English reading teaching.Though cooperative learning has been applied in many aspects,it has not been implemented widely in English teaching in middle school.From the perspective of cooperative learning,this thesis spares no efforts to tackle the following two questions:1.Can cooperative learning help middle school students improve their performance?2.Can cooperative learning enhance middle school students' interest in English learning?The study cost the author one semester,from September 2015 to January 2016.The experiment was carried out in Grade 9,Class 3(experimental class)and Class 4(controlled class)of Guangzhou NO.18 Middle School in which the author worked as a practice teacher.Cooperative learning was implemented in experimental class,while the traditional method was implemented in the controlled class.The process of the experiment is as following:First,a pre-test conducted by the author showed the students' reading ability in two classes,meanwhile,the author collected the information of the students' English reading situation by carrying out pre-questionnaire.Through the pretest and questionnaires,the author found that there was no difference between the two classes in English reading.Second,the author implemented cooperative learning in the experimental class for a whole semester.The data of the post-test showed that cooperative learning had a positive effect in improving students'English reading ability.Lastly,through analyzing the data of questionnaire and the result of experiment,the author found that cooperative learning improved students'English reading performance and enhanced their interest.The collected data shows that cooperative learning is superior to the traditional method--in that it creates a relaxed and interactive learning atmosphere,students'enthusiasm is aroused and positive attitude is formed.Moreover,students' confidence in English reading is built and their reading abilities are improved.In order to make full use of the potential of cooperative learning,English teacher should update their teaching ideology and change the way of teaching;Students should get rid of the habit of depending on their teachers and try their best to learn from cooperative learning.
