Vocabulary is the key factor to English learning.Meara(1996)holds the opinion that there is a positive correlation between one's vocabulary and his ability in reading,writing,listening,and speaking.In English teaching,vocabulary teaching and learning are time-consuming and the results are not ideal,As a result,more and more students lack confidence in English vocabulary learning,what's worse,some students even lose their interests in English.Given these circumstances,this thesis introduces "the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk" to English classroom.During the process of vocabulary teaching,the author employs the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk,tries to exploit the semantic relations between the lexical chunk,and forms a semantic network according to their semantic similarities.This thesis tries to answer the following questions:(1)What effect dose the application of the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk have on students' interests in English learning?(2)What influence dose the application the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk have on vocabulary memorizing?(3)Will the application of the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk improve students' learning results?The author selects 2 classes from Grade one in a certain senior high school in Panjin,Liaoning Province as research subjects.Class six is as the Experimental Class(EC)and class five as the Control Class(CC).The author applies the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk to the English vocabulary teaching and makes some related researches.In order to ensure the validity of the experiment,the author adopts both qualitative and quantitative approaches for this experiment.The author adopts tests,interview and questionnaire as instruments.Before the experiment,the author collects and analyzes the test paper of the students in EC and CC;during the experiment,the author adopts the spreading activation model based on lexical chunk in EC,while in CC,the author adopts the traditional teaching method;after the experiment,the author collects and analyzes the data of the post-test,questionnaire,and the interview,finally,the conclusions are drawn based on the research data that the application of spreading activation model based on lexical chunk to vocabulary teaching can arose students' interest in English;can help students memorize vocabulary,and ease the burden of vocabulary memorizing;can improve the students' learning results.
