Vocabulary teaching method has got more and more attention by linguistics in recentyears. Michael Lewis first proposed lexical approach in1993, with a large amount of actuallanguage literature as the basis, he pointed out that lexical chunks are the key point inlanguage use and language teaching. Lexical chunks accelerated the speed of languageprocessing. It has great significance on the promotion of language acquisition and languagefluency. This study based on the researches of lexical chunks proposed by Michael Lewis andother researchers, explored the theories in English vocabulary teaching.The paper firstly analyzes the current situation and existing problems in Englishvocabulary teaching in junior middle school, and points out the importance of this research.According to the objectives in new English curriculum standard for vocabulary learning,related to domestic and abroad research on vocabulary teaching, the author puts forward thatlexical chunk instruction in junior schools can help increase students’ vocabulary size andfoster students’ lexical chunk awareness.In order to verify the effect, the author takes the80students of two classes in GradeEight of Taian Xinhua Middle School over a period of twelve weeks teaching experiment.Through the analysis of the final exam results, vocabulary tests results and the results ofquestionnaires, the author finds the experimental group students’ vocabulary size andvocabulary learning awareness are higher than control group. This shows that lexical chunkinstruction in junior schools can help increase students’ vocabulary size and foster students’lexical chunk awareness.
