Reading comprehension is an important language learning skill which should be paid much attention in English reading class.Based on National English Curriculum Standards for General High School in 2003,senior high school courses aim to develop all-round evaluating systems and foster students' all-round development.In that case,the author tries applying text linguistics theory to teaching English reading in senior high school for improve students' reading comprehension.On one hand,reading is a vital resource in gaining information,which can broaden student's horizon.On the other hand,reading comprehension plays a great role in college entrance exam.It affects students' scores directly.However,teachers focus more on words,grammar and techniques while ignoring discourse awareness in traditional classes.Hence,the research questions in this thesis are as follows:(1)Can the application of text linguistics theory in English reading class strengthen students' discourse awareness?(2)Is the application of text linguistics theory helpful to improve students' accuracy rate in English reading comprehension tests?There were total 105 students from Longwang Middle School taking part in the experiments.Subjects were from two natural classes of Grade 2 in the school.We randomly chose Class 2 as control class,and Class 3 as the experimental class.In the experimental class,the teacher applied text linguistics theory to teaching English reading,and guided students how to apply text linguistics to English reading.The control class was taught in traditional method.Questionnaire,interview and tests were employed in the research.SPSS(Statistical Product and Service Solutions)was used to analyze data.The experimental statistics show that applying text linguistics theory to English class can improve students' discourse awareness and accuracy rate in English reading comprehension.Applying text linguistics theory to teaching English reading in senior high school does not abandon vocabulary and grammar totally.It improves strategy of getting information,enhances textual knowledge,and improves comprehensive ability and quality of language,which are helpful to learn how to read and then benefit from it for the whole life.
