Reading is an important input skill,which plays a crucial role in foreign language teaching.With the development of society,the requirements for students' reading proficiency are higher and higher.However,traditional reading teaching cannot satisfy the higher requirement from the society and the weaknesses of traditional reading teaching are more and more obvious.Many researchers try to look for more effective ways to improve students' reading proficiency,and the application of discourse analysis to reading teaching is one of them.Discourse analysis takes the theory of cohesion,textual patterns and context analysis as its theoretical frameworks.Discourse analysis emphasizes that reading instruction can be conducted from two levels: macro-structure analysis and micro-structure analysis.Therefore,it is very necessary to testify the feasibility and efficiency of the application of discourse analysis to English reading teaching in senior high school.The research questions of this study are:1.What are the influences of the application of discourse analysis to English reading teaching on students' general reading strategies?2.To what extent does the application of discourse analysis to English reading teaching improve students' reading proficiency?The research is conducted in Haicheng Senior High School,which lasts 4 months.The research participants are 90 students who are chosen randomly from two parallel classes.One class is control class(CC)with 45 students and the other is experimental class(EC)with 45 students.During the research,traditional reading teaching method is used in CC and the application of discourse analysis to reading teaching is employed in EC.The research instruments include questionnaire,test,interview and SPSS 19.0.The questionnaire and test are used to collect data and the SPSS 19.0 is used to process the collected data.There is an interview in the experimental class at the end of the research.Based on data analysis,it can be concluded that the application of discourse analysis to reading teaching has positive influences on students' general reading strategies and students have made great progress in the usage of skimming,scanning,guessing words' meaning,prediction,and recognizing references.Students' reading proficiency is also improved greatly at the same time.In the post test,students' mean score in the EC increases by 10.5% and students in the EC outperform the students in the CC by 10.3%.Therefore,the application of discourse analysis to reading teaching is feasible and effective and it is worth giving further studies.
