Reading is a main channel of access to information and an effective channel oflanguage input. In foreign language learning, reading is widely acknowledged to becrucial to the cultivation of learners’ linguistic competence. Therefore, the teachingof reading has a significant place in English teaching, and how to improve studentsreading competence has also become teachers’ puzzle.Moreover, in the current Jiangsu college entrance examination, direct readingcomprehension questions account for30points, indirect items like Cloze andTask-based reading account for30points,50%of the total score. With the genrediverse and structure more complex, the requirements of the students reading skillsare also increasing. Therefore, it is urgent to cultivate students’ awareness of readingstrategies to improve their English reading ability. The theories of discourse analysisand reading strategies proposed by domestic and foreign scholars have provided anew perspective and new methods for teaching of English reading.In order to further understand and explore whether the discourse analysis andreading strategy training contribute to improvement of reading comprehension, theauthor uses questionnaire, tests in addition to interviews to investigate the use ofreading strategies employed by senior high school students. And then anexperimental study is carried out. After one-semester reading strategies training onstudents in two Senior Three classes in daily classes and reading activities, relevantdata before and after the experiment show that students’ reading capacity hasgreatly developed and the overall English scores also significantly improved.This study has reached a conclusion: reading strategies can be trained andstrengthened; a combination of discourse analysis and reading strategy training caneffectively improve students English reading speed and reading skills and enhancetheir confidence of learning English.This dissertation consists of five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction, which gives a brief description of currentsituation of English teaching of reading in senior high school and states the research purpose, significance, and research methods.The Second Chapter is a brief introduction to the research of the domestic andforeign scholars on reading strategies and discourse analysis.The Third Chapter focuses on the experimental study on training the students’reading strategies.The Fourth Chapter is the investigation of the reading strategies throughquestionnaires, tests and interviews and their analysis and discussion.Chapter Five summarizes the main findings of this study, and pointed out thelimitations of the study.
