The ultimate goal of language teaching is to develop the comprehensive language ability of learners. In our country,English class is still the main place for middle school students to learn English. However, the traditional English teaching methods used in most parts of our country focus more on teaching linguistic knowledge and grammar rules, rather than cultivating learners’ communicative competence. The effectiveness of classroom teaching is closely related with the degree of students’ participation in classroom activities and the situation of classroom interaction. Therefore, improving the quality of classroom communication and creating high-quality and effective classroom interaction have become the key points to ensure the effectiveness of classroom teaching. After reading relevant literature, the author finds that there are few scholars who have researched the interaction between teachers and students in exemplary English lessons of junior high schools. This study based on Long’s interaction hypothesis theory, using Flanders Interaction Analysis System improved by Chinese authoritative scholars(referred to as iFIAS)as the instrument, makes quantitative and qualitative analysis on three classes randomly selected in grades from the video recordings of the eleventh National Exemplary English Lessons of Junior High Schools in 2015,to research the main features and problems of the interaction between teachers and students in exemplary English lessons of junior high schools. This study aims to provide an opportunity for English teachers to know the situation of classroom interaction between teachers and students in exemplary English lessons of junior high schools. The study finds that in the interaction between teachers and students in exemplary English lessons of junior high schools, the proportion of students’ verbal behavior equals to that of teachers’ in overall, which means students become the main subject of classroom interaction, and the interaction has the features of high frequency, obvious process, diversified subjects and forms and so on.However, there are some problems in the interaction at the same time, such as teachers tend to prefer the direct teaching style;teachers ask much more closed questions than open questions;students have few opportunities to explore initiatively. So,the author puts forward six suggestions, which include that teachers should impose more indirect influence on students in the process of teaching, use the method of group cooperation more to promote interaction among students, and ask more open and innovative questions.
