PPT,a modern teaching technique,combines multiple modes such as words,pictures,audio-video mode and other modes to make meaning.Previous studies mainly focus on theoretical aspects and on multimodal analysis of teaching materials and methods of college English-classes.However,studies on the application of multimodal PPT in junior high school English classroom teaching are few.Based on the theories of Input Enhancement and Cognitive Load Theory and through the analysis of multimodal PPT,this study explores the current use of PPT from the perspective of different modes,students' and teachers' concepts of and their attitudes towards multimodal PPT,and the strengths and weaknesses of multimodal PPT.The thesis mainly studies the following three questions:(1).What modes are used in multimodal PPT?(2).What are the teachers' and students' attitudes towards multimodal PPT?(3).What are the strengths and the weaknesses of the application of multimodal PPT?This research collects 814 PPT slides from the English teachers of Grade Two from No.3 Junior High School in Yantai,Shandong Province and data are collected by means of questionnaires,including a questionnaire for teachers and a questionnaire for students,interviews and classroom observation.After data analysis,the author finds:(1).Among all modes used in multimodal PPT,texts account for 45.15%,typography and color account for 31.08%,while picture mode accounts for 19.41%,and audio-video mode accounts for 4.36%.(2).Most students hold a positive attitude towards the use of multimodal PPT in English classes.Students agree that multimodal PPT can help them concentrate on their learning and improve their listening comprehension.Moreover,students harbor the idea that important points in multimodal PPT can be emphasized.And among all the modes that students prefer,the top three are animation,audio,and video modes.English teachers also hold a positive attitude towards multimodal PPT.Texts,typography and color,and picture mode enjoy great popularity among English teachers.What's more,they look forward to receiving training on the design of multimodal PPT.(3).Multimodal PPT has such advantages as operating easily and conveniently,promoting students' interest,stimulating classroom atmosphere,supplementing spoken language,promoting students' holistic development and so on.On the other hand,there are still quite a few problems that need to be discussed further in the PPT samples,such as inappropriate selection of modes,misuse of bullets,poor page layout,inharmonious collocation of colors and little interactivity between teachers and students.(4).On the basis of the above findings,this thesis puts forward some corresponding suggestions.
