Reading plays an important role in English teaching,and it is also the most essential way for students to acquire knowledge.With the reformation of English education,the New English Curriculum Standard describes that students should positively be involved in learning activities,learn to make use of reading strategies so that they can get information,develop reading skills and improve reading proficiency.However,in the actual English teaching in senior high school,students are still expected to focus on vocabulary and grammar.As a result,it is necessary to put forward an effective teaching method to help students' English learning.Concept map,proposed by Joseph.D.Novak,is a diagram presenting the relationships of knowledge based on Ausubel's meaningful learning theories and can be beneficial for students to connect the new knowledge with the acquired one so as to understand the whole reading text.At present,the concept map of English reading teaching is under development and will be still further studied.This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the application of the concept map to English reading teaching.The research questions include(1)can concept map have a positive influence on the students' use of English reading strategies?(2)can concept map improve students' English reading proficiency? From September,2016 to January,2017,the researcher chooses two parallel classes of senior 1 in the Fenfei Middle School in Nangong,Xingtai city as experimental subjects,with 56 in the experimental class and 56 in the control class.In the control class,the teacher uses traditional teaching method while the experimental class takes advantage of the concept map for teaching.In order to show students' present reading strategies situation,the questionnaire is distributed before the experiment,and after the experiment,12 students from different levels are invited to interview with the teacher and the same questionnaire will be offered to students who are in the experimental class to investigate the efficacy of the use of concept map in reading strategies.To prove whether the concept map is beneficial to foster the students' reading proficiency,the researcher does a pre-test by using the result of first monthly examination so as to analyze whether there is significantly different between two parallel classes.And then the researcher does a post-test by means of the fourth monthly examination to check whether the concept map is helpful to improve the students' English reading proficiency.This study shows that the application of the concept map can improve students to use English reading strategies and promote their English reading proficiency.It is inductive for students to connect their prior knowledge with the new one.In conclusion,the use of the concept map has a positive effect on English teaching.
