With the development of society and educational reform,people have paid more attention to English learning especially to English reading.In recent years,there are many teaching ideas intending to facilitate the competence of English reading.While among them,metaphor teaching is considered to be more potential to enhance students reading competence.Its cultivation for cognitive style caters to the requirements for English teaching emphasized by the educational reform.Conceptual metaphor is regarded as not only linguistic phenomenon but also an important cognitive mode of human being.The application of conceptual metaphor to language acquisition has been researched both at home and abroad.However,these researches mainly focus on the whole English or vocabulary teaching,with a nearly blank in reading teaching.This experiment is conducted to answer two questions:1.Can the senior high school students' interest in English reading be stimulated by conceptual metaphor teaching?2.Can conceptual metaphor teaching enhance the students' reading comprehension capacity in senior high school?Under such situation,this thesis is conducted to explore the effects from the application of conceptual metaphor to reading teaching in senior high school English class.To prove the feasibility of the study,98 participants are involved in the experiment,who are from two parallel classes.In the experimental class,conceptual metaphor teaching was added with the purpose of cultivating the cognitive thinking of students in English reading.while in the control class,the teacher follows the general routine as usual in English teaching.To guarantee the reliability and validity of the study,the data of pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire and pre-reading and post-reading tests are analyzed by SPSS19.0.Through the experiment,it is shown that it is effective to add conceptual metaphor teaching in facilitating the interest and competence in English reading for senior high school students.However,in terms of some inevitable factors in the experiments,some factors still remain to be investigated,in terms of which the author also points out the limitations and implication as well as suggestions for the proceeding researches.
