English teaching in Senior High School aims to cultivate students' English comprehensive ability,and reading plays an important role in English teaching and learning.However,in reading teaching,teachers always pay more attention to explain the knowledge points,and ignore to teach reading methods.So it is difficult to improve students reading ability.Lakoff and Johnson argues that metaphor is a cross domain mapping.They believe that metaphor is pervasive in people's life and language.It is an important way to understand the world and develop the human language.Under its influence,many scholars began to realize that the theory of metaphor can be applied to foreign language teaching.Many Chinese scholars also started to research,but mostly focuses on vocabulary teaching,or applied to senior English teaching,such as college English,business English,and so on.But research on senior high school is very little,and lack of details analysis strategy.So this paper aims to study how to cultivate students' reading ability by conceptual metaphor theory.This paper is mainly based on the application of conceptual metaphor theory in English Reading Teaching to improve students reading ability.Therefore,the author introduces the related theory of conceptual metaphor,and firstly,introduces the definition of the conceptual metaphor;secondly,introduce the mechanism of conceptual metaphor;thirdly,Lakoff and Johnson divide conceptual metaphor into three categories: structural metaphor,ontological metaphor and orientational metaphor;lastly,metaphor's characteristics are systematic,universality and cultural coherence.On this basis,the author carries out a teaching experiment for three months in Heilongjiang Province Experimental High School;the experimental data collected from the results of the two reading test,and using SPSS to analyze the data try to prove that conceptual metaphor is effective to improve reading ability of the students.And put forward some teaching strategies:(1)use of conceptual metaphors to help students understand the lexical metaphor,metaphorical expressions and idioms;(2)use of conceptual metaphor to analysis discourse coherence;(3)pay attention to teach the cultural background knowledge;(4)pay attention to the metaphor cultural differences in teaching;(5)pay attention to cultivate students' metaphorical thinking.This paper is proved that conceptual metaphor is helpful to improve the students' reading ability.It is valuable in theory and in practice.The theoretical significance of this paper is mainly to prove that the conceptual metaphor theory is feasible and necessary using in reading teaching;and in practice teaching,put forward some teaching strategies,and through empirical research confirms its rationality.It's a new way for reading teaching.Therefore,in the future reading teaching should be better combine with conceptual metaphor theory to improve students reading ability and the comprehensive ability of English.
