With the development of English new curriculum reform, especially with the implementation of The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2011),more and more English teachers are concerning themselves with how to improve the efficiency of English writing teaching. Some scholars believe that, for Chinese students in an English–as-a-foreign-language environment,Recitation-Imitation approach can enlarge the language input, raise their sense of language and enhance their English thinking ability. Some scholars believe that Recitation-Imitation Approach can't improve English writing competence of Junior high school students while Process Approach can stimulate students' interest in English writing, train their cooperation spirit.Does Process Approach Writing prevail over Recitation-Imitation Approach? With the methods of literature analysis, questionnaire and experiment, the study aims to investigate the following questions:(1)Which of the teaching approaches, either Recitation-Imitation Approach or Process Approach, can better improve writing competence of students in Junior high school?(2)Which of the teaching approaches, either Recitation-Imitation Approach or Process Approach, can have deeper influence on the students' attitude and interest? The author has carried on a 4-month empirical research in Zhangjiakou NO.7 Middle School. The subjects of the experiment were 134 students from two classes of Grade Eight. The empirical instruments include two questionnaires,a pre-test and a post-test.The result of pre-test shows that there is no obvious difference between Class A and Class B in the writing competence. After 4-month experiment, the author analyzes the collected data by Independent-Sample t-test and Paired-Sample t-test.The result shows that both approaches can help students improve their writing competence and interest in writing. However, there is no significant difference between Class A and Class B in writing competence and interest, which means that Process Approach does not have obvious advantages over Recitation-Imitation Approach. If the two methods can be combined,it is believed that the efficiency of writing teaching will be improved more effectively than simply using one of them.
