John Dewey is the giant of educational thoughts.In America,he occupies a position just as Confucius in China.In China,especially in Chinese education,he is also a great man.Since Dewey's first time to visit China during May Fourth Movement,he is tightly bound to China.Now in America,Dewey's educational thoughts no longer to be showy,they often blend into national life to give energy to American education.This study tries to explore oscillation and evolution track of Dewey's educational thoughts in American context.In this way,we can show the interpretation and educational influence of Dewey's thought from the angles of America.At last,we can get some enlightenment for the study of Dewey's educational thoughts and educational reform in China.First,this study neatens the studies on Dewey's educational thoughts both from foreign counties and China.In China,the studies concentrate on three parts.They are educational theories,comparative studies and the influence and enlightenment to China.For foreign countries,the studies show two characteristics: comprehensiceness and transboundary.The key points of collection and interpretation of these literatures are the theoretical research and practical application of Dewey's thought in America.Then,we explore the relationship between American education and Dewey's educational thoughts.Dewey's educational thoughts has experienced formation period,silence period,renaissance period and developing period.From Progressive Education Movement to 1960 s and then to 1970 s,Dewey's educational thoughts in America has experienced the first three period.By analyzing current situation of American education from the angles of education characteristics,education system,curriculum and teaching materials,teachers and teaching to inspect the development of Dewey's educational thoughts.At the end of this chapter,we integrate the study above and make predictions to interactive tendency of Dewey's educational thoughts with American education.We divide American study on Dewey into four periods with the clue of study center of American scholar.The first period is starting stage,from 1900 s to 1930 s.The second period is developing stage,from 1930 s to 1950 s.The third period is smooth stage,from 1960 s to 1970 s.The last period is in-depth stage,from 1980 s to now.The characteristics of these studies are disciplines span,targeted and the coexisting of support and criticize.We analyze some literatures of American scholars,so that we can get how these scholars view Dewey and his thoughts.Perspectives of American scholars are also significant.Although,there are different opinions to Dewey,Dewey is still important in American education.The standpoint,angle,method and evaluate in these articles can help us to comprehensively understand Dewey and his educational thoughts.Then we analyze and evaluate the American Classroom Teaching of Elementary and Middle School on the basis of last chapter.The study refers Dewey's “learning by doing”,“five-step teaching method”,views on children and teachers are going so deep into American basic education.Finally,from all above,the study comes out with some conclusion.First of all,from the angle of developing track of Dewey's educational thoughts in America,we find Dewey's educational thoughts are in the untouchable position in America.Dewey's educational thoughts are the developing and constantly improving educational thoughts.Dewey's educational thoughts can show extraordinary talents in future American Education.Secondly,from the angle of Dewey's educational thoughts studies of American scholars,we find Dewey's educational thoughts never turn pale and the studies of Dewey's educational thoughts develop with Dewey's educational thoughts' develop.Then,from the angle of Dewey's entire profile in America,we find Dewey's educational thoughts have influence on education,philosophy,society and politics.Dewey is the most significant education in America.At last,from the angle of documentary,we find Dewey's educational thoughts have osmotic influence on American education and some of Dewey's educational thoughts are still applicative after hundred years.Then we get enlightenment.First,the interpretation of Dewey's educational thoughts should be put into the background of American culture and educational reform.We can't just explain the words from the general meaning.We'd better combine Chinese education with Dewey's educational thought,so that we can have chinizational interpretation.To teachers,to devote themselves into Dewey's thought again is necessary.They should also break through traditional dualistic thought,and refactor the relationship between teachers and students,teaching and learning.To the studies of Dewey,they should concentrate more on concepts.They also should pay more attention to other thoughts of Dewey,so that they can form a comprehensive Dewey.There are also some deficiencies in this study,for instants,the material is not rich enough,the analysis is not localize enough and the researcher hasn't experienced real American class.We hope all the deficiencies can be solved in the future study.
