The development of computer technology, information media and digital technology has led to the development of modern educational technology. Language is no longer the only channel of classroom communication, while pictures, colors,fonts, audios, videos and so on also play important roles in English teaching.Nowadays, the classroom teaching generally uses multimedia to teach, which increases the interest and flexibility of teaching. However, English teaching still exists the teaching model centered on the vocabulary and grammar teaching. This kind of teaching model makes students have a low level of English reading comprehension and lack of learning interest.Multimodal teaching model combines multiple modes, and fully mobilizes a variety of senses of the students to arouse students' attention, and to let students grasp and understand the knowledge easily, and to achieve a better teaching result. In multimodal teaching model, English teachers can make full use of PPT courseware,play audios and videos, show pictures and tables, use wordart, font color and underline, and use rich body language where students can learn language knowledge vividly.This thesis applies the instructional design to English reading teaching in junior high school based on multimodal teaching model. First of all, the thesis elaborates the related information of multimodal teaching model and English reading teaching so as to set a theoretical foundation for the instructional design. Secondly, the author uses questionnaires to investigate the basic situations of the students and the reading teaching. Based on the result, the author makes an instructional design of one unit and applies it to one class of Grade Seven. After implementing the instructional design, the author analyzes and evaluates this class through questionnaires,interviews and classroom observation.The author draws a conclusion through the observation of this lesson and the evaluations of the supervisor and students. In the reading class, the application of multimodal teaching model can enhance the students' classroom participation, and help students understand and memorize the passage, and stimulate students' interest in learning.
