Reading is an important way to obtain information.English reading plays an important role in cultivating students' integrated language skills.Hence,reading is crucial in English teaching.However,influenced by exam-oriented education,Grammar Translation method and other traditional teaching methods,English reading teaching in senior schools still focuses on vocabulary and grammar,students have little interest on reading and lack background information,which can't improve students' reading abilities.In order to improve students' reading skills,teachers should guide students with some scientific and efficient reading strategies,and put them into practice to achieve efficient reading.According to Schema Theory,reading is a process in which the former schemas stored in readers' mind interact with the reading materials to help form schemas,which has a positive influence on improve reading ability,especially on affective attitude and cultural awareness.On the basis of systematicallystudying the definition,classification,theory development and application of Schema theory,the writer carried out an investigation into the current situation of Grade One students' English reading learning in one of the senior high schools of southern Ningxia,analyzed the existing problems,and then conduced an experiential study by applying Schema Theory to senior students' English reading teaching,which fully proved Schema Theory's positive effect of improving students' English reading ability.
