Listening is one of the basic skills in mastering a language and an important form of language activity. The cultivation of listening plays a very important role in foreign language teaching, but it is also one of the most difficult parts in teaching and there are many problems. The traditional listening teaching can't improve students' listening ability effectively. Therefore,it is necessary to explore the feasible methods to improve the efficiency of listening teaching.Scaffolding instruction as a teaching strategy originates from Vygotsky's concept of the zone of proximal development(ZPD)."Scaffolding" is a term used in architecture when a new construction project starts and it always needs scaffolding outside the main body of the building in order to facilitate the construction. In Scaffolding Instructional Model,a more knowledgeable or competent person provides scaffoldings or supports for the learners to facilitate their development.Scaffolding instruction plays the role in class teaching as an expert provides temporary support to learners to "help bridge the gap between what the learners know and.can do and what the learners need to accomplish in order to succeed at a particular learning task"(Vygotsky,1978).I try to apply the Scaffolding Instructional Model to the junior middle school English listening course.During a one-semester-long teaching experiment, the Listening teaching is in accordance with Erecting Scaff—Entering the situation—independent exploration—Collaborative Learning—effect evaluation. This research is conducted in two parallel classes. Before the experiment, questionnaires and interviews were conducted to find out the difficulties in the teaching and learning of listening, and the students in the two classes were at the same level by testing. In the experiments,Scaffolding Instructional Model is used in the experimental class, while the traditional way of teaching listening is applied in the control class. After the experiment, the two classes were tested at the same time.Compared with the control class, the progress of the experimental class was obviously larger. Both classes are required to have an interview and fill out a questionnaire to have a comparison. The experimental results show that Scaffolding Instructional Model can better stimulate students' interest in learning, change students' learning habits and effectively improve students' listening ability.
