| Word learning is the basic part of English learning.The feedback from the students also shows that word memorization is one of the difficult learning processes.As the students move up to the next grades,the learning materials become more difficult.Along with the increasing difficulty of English learning,students’ English competence polarizes seriously.But in rural primary school,the traditional English word teaching method has dominated all the time,which makes the rural primary school students memorize the English vocabulary in an ineffective way.In contrast,phonics is very helpful for the native English beginners as a method for word learning and memorization.It sparks off my thinking if phonics is also effective for the pupils of my school,a typical rural primary school in Shandong,China.The author investigates the effect of phonics on the English word memorization of primary school students by methods of literature study,questionnaire,interview,and experimental teaching.The author tries to answer the following questions:(1)Phonics is helpful for the word memorization of primary school students.Which processes of English word memorization benefit most from it ? With the help of phonics,will students memorize English words faster or more accurately?(2)Phonics is helpful for the word memorization of primary school students.Do students of different English levels benefit from it in the same degree? If different,which group of students benefits most from it?In this research,literature review is first conducted to learn the current study of phonics and word memorization.By questionnaire and interview,the author gets to know how words are taught at school and what teachers and students know about phonics.Then,the author integrates phonics into teaching practice and testes students’ word memorization in terms of speed and accuracy.Based on the analysis of the data from the tests,the author draws the conclusion.First,phonics is helpful for the English word memorization.In addition to enhancing both short-term and long-term memorization of words,phonics facilitates the word recollection and word recognition.Second,students of different English levels benefit differently from phonicsassisted learning of words.In the study,students are divided into three groups(A、B and C respectively stand for top,medium and low proficiency)according to their English levels.Among them,students in Group C improve the most in the ability of word memorization.Group B students feel less stressed on English learning.Students in Group A make great changes in their perceptions about word memorization and master more memorizing skills.Third,the impact upon students’ English learning by phonics has the strong stronger trend.That is to say,Group A students make the biggest process in English reading,listening,writing and speaking.In the future English teaching,the author will try to use phonics in other aspects of English teaching and students of other grades and schools in order to test its impact on the English word memorization of primary school students. |
