Vocabulary is the basis of language learning.Without vocabulary, people may lose an essential way of acquiring knowledge and information. On the one hand, vocabulary learning has been a difficult problem for English beginners. The main reason lies in the fact that the internal relations between sound and shape are ignored, and the sound, shape and meaning are not effectively combined. On the other hand, phonics is a kind of method training students' word reading and word spelling ability by establishing correspondence between letters or letter combinations and pronunciation. This research aims to apply phonics to the People's Education Press course of English in primary school, investigating the effect of phonics on students' word reading and spelling ability, and the influence on students' vocabulary learning interest. The experimental method is adopted and 60 students in two parallel classes of Grade 5 are chosen as subjects. The experimental group learns vocabulary with the help of teachers' phonics instruction while the control group is taught in traditional method to learn vocabulary.By conducting tests and questionnaires, the research aims to explore three questions:(1)What's the effect of phonics on students' word reading ability?(2)What's the effect of phonics on students' word spelling ability?(3)Does phonics increase students' vocabulary learning interest? The results from this research demonstrate that phonics can improve students' word reading and word spelling ability, and also inspire students' interest of vocabulary learning.Based on the major findings of the research, the researcher suggests that English language teachers should apply phonics to vocabulary teaching, cultivating students to establish a link between the sound and shape to help memorize words and to inspire their vocabulary learning interest. The researcher also analyzes the limitations of the present study and presents an outlook for future research.
