English autonomous learning is one of the hot topics in the field of foreign language teaching.Many scholars and teachers have done a lot of research on English autonomous learning and achieved certain achievements.English New Curriculum advocates that teachers are regarded as the leading factor and students as the main body in English teaching and learning,and make students become the masters of learning.It is in fact the features of implementing the idea of autonomous learning.The development of English teaching shows that the main target of today’s research has gradually shifted from teachers to students,and the research focus is how to enable the students to take initiative to participate in the learning process actively and improve learning efficiency more effectively.Based on autonomous learning as a topic,the present study tries to study and discuss the current situation of senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability for two reasons.Firstly,it has been proved by practice that autonomous learning is one of the effective ways of learning in the New Curriculum Reform.Secondly,it is the best time for students to learn and cultivate their learning awareness,and form the learning habit in the period of senior high school.However,there are also a lot of features related to them which are needed to analyze and explore in this period.Therefore,it is an important task for teachers to guide students how to learn in senior high school.Based on the theory of autonomous learning,the present study takes 153 Senior One Students of Hainan Wenchang Middle School as the subjects.It tries to investigate their autonomous learning from seven aspects,such as independent consciousness and learning motivation(purpose),learning plan,learning content,learning strategy,learning evaluation(assessment)and the learning environment.The research methods are questionnaire,interview and classroom observation.Two problems are mainly explored and analyzed in the present study:(1)What is the status of Senior One Students’ English autonomous learning?What are the problems existing in their English autonomous learning?(2)How to help high school students cultivate the awareness and the ability of English autonomous learning?The quantitative data of the questionnaire are analyzed by SPSS 10.0.The results drawn from the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data show that:(1)The subjects’English autonomous learning ability is at a relatively low level,showing that they learn passively and lack of initiative.(2)The subjects’ learning purpose is not clear and lack distinct planning,and besides,their learning motivation often results.from external factors.(3)Their knowledge of autonomous learning strategies is not enough,so their learning style is relatively single.(4)Their ability of independent management is relatively weak and the channel of evaluation and gaining feedback is relatively limited.According to the results of analysis in the present study,the study puts forward some related suggestions on how to cultivate students’ autonomous learning strategy:(1)School should further strengthen the management strategies for cultivating and improving students’ English autonomous learning awareness.(2)For teachers,they should further strengthen the guidance of students’ learning strategies and promote the improvement of students’ autonomous learning ability.(3)As for students,they should fully realize the importance of English learning strategies and have a sense of urgency by cultivating strategies.
