China's modern educational reform calls for teachers to apply more effective teaching methods to English classroom teaching. As a teaching method of keeping pace with the times, the Situational Approach not only meets the needs of the new curriculum reform, but also helps to stimulate students' interest in learning and to cultivate students' comprehensive language ability.Situational Approach has been widely used in all works of life at home and abroad, but there is little research on its application to the primary school English teaching. And there is almost no research on the more specific and detailed Situational Approach in primary school English teaching. The Situation Approach in this study emphasizes the situational creation of students as the main subject, and advocates the creation of several interrelated sub-situations around the theme line to guide students to perceive, understand and use language in situations. This is in line with the learning characteristics of most pupils.Applying Situational Approach to primary school English classroom teaching is of great significance to enrich the connotation of Situational Approach and to improve the actual teaching effectiveness. This thesis intends to evaluate the feasibility of applying Situational Approach to primary school English teaching through answering the following two questions:(1)What effects does Situational Approach have on elementary students' English scores?(2)What effects does Situational Approach have on the retention of primary school students' interest in English learning? Therefore, the author carried out a semester of experimental research. Two classes of Grade Three students with no significant difference in English proficiency were chosen as subjects, and the two classes were taught by the author.Class5 was selected as the experimental class, and Class 6 was selected as the controlled class. In the experimental class,Situational Approach were applied to English classroom teaching, while in the controlled class, the traditional teaching method was used.Theexperimental methods include pre-test,post-test,pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire on the students in both classes.Through the comparison and analysis of the final results of the two classes,a conclusion is drawn that Situational Approach can effectively improve the students' English scores.Through the analysis of the results of the questionnaires, the author also found that Situational Approach is effective and efficient in maintaining and improving the students' interest in English learning. The results of this study have some implications for primary school English teaching. In the primary school English teaching,Situational Approach not only has practical teaching effect, but also shows the students' dominant position, which is good for the cultivation of the learners' thinking ability and communicative ability. But it needs higher professional qualities of teachers, and how the teachers dig out the extra-curricular resources to help the creation of specific situations, and how to make the situation more reasonable and appropriate.More research must be made in terms of these problems in the future.
