Teacher’s instructions refer to the summation of teacher’s language output in class.To be more specific,they refer to the detailed questions or orders teacher use to guide the students to accomplish a certain task,the elaboration of the teaching contents and the evaluations they use to evaluate students’ behaviors.It’s the main media of teaching,and to a great extent,it determines the output of teacher’s knowledge and the input of students’ knowledge.According to the New English Curriculum Standard(2011),teachers’ instructions are an indispensable part of teachers’ discourses in class.-(New English Curriculum Standard-2011).The instructions which teachers adopt or use have a significant effect on the students,and it is also an important means to organize teaching and maintain the atmosphere in the classroom.Therefore,this paper argues that the study of the teachers’ instructions in English class,especially in foreign language schools where the instructions play an exemplary role during teaching is helpful to improve English Teaching efficiency in foreign languages junior high school.It has a certain guiding significance to English teaching practice.The purpose of this study is to show the present situation and main categories of instructions the teachers use in oral classes of foreign language schools.The thesis mainly focuses on the following research questions: 1)what are the main categories,features and functions of teacher’s instructions which are used in foreign language schools? 2)The factors that affect the effectiveness of teachers’ instructions during teaching;3)the main problems existing in the using of teacher’s instructions as well as some effective suggestions.The author takes 10 English classes from five Foreign Language Schools in Chengdu and their English teachers as the research objects,uses classroom observation(notes/records)as the main method,questionnaire and interview as supplements.Nearly three hundred questionnaires were given to the students to collect and analyze their feedback on English teachers’ instructions.Through the case study in classroom observation,the author has noticed the main problems,influencing factors and solutions of teacher’s instructions in junior high school English classroom.The main results are as follows: 1)The instructions used in junior middle school can be divided into greeting,orders,questions,evaluations and elaborations according to the function of it;2)The main factors which influence the effective use of teacher’s instructions lie in the development of teachers’ cultural consciousness and emotional awareness;3)The main problems of the instructions in junior high school are as followings: greetings are simply fixed which is hard to arouse students’ interest;there are too much repetition in the orders and meanwhile the references are fuzzy;the questions are with many grammatical errors,and it’s too plain;evaluations are always direct and sharp,sometimes even the logic is not clear.The corresponding improvement measures are: teachers should pay real notice to the instructions and its development;the teacher should handle the relationship between native language and English more carefully and teachers’ awareness of intercultural communication should be improved as well.Generally speaking,teacher’s instructions should be popular and lively,exciting and changeable,specific and communicative.In addition,this paper also stated the weak points,which can be further discussed in the future.
