As an important subject,English have caught great attention all the time.In order to improve students' English ability, numerous experts and scholars from home and broad have studied various aspects of English, and also, they have got great achievements,Contributing greatly to the basic theory and practice for the development of English.Recently, the rise of Phonics has made many scholars and teachers start to explore whether it can improve students' ability of word reading and spelling.A lot of institutions also have tried to capture many parents and students' attention by the slogan:pronunciation hearing can promote words recognition, words watching can facilitate pronunciation.Actually, the students in primary and middle school really have some difficulties in spelling and recognizing words, which gives space to explore Phonics. There exist a great deal of experiments about Phonics. However, analyzing the current researches,we can found that:from the view of research groups, the majority group are concerned with primary students,it seems that little attention is paid to students of other learning stages;from the view of research questions, most experiments about Phonics attach great importance to the influence on English vocabulary learning rather than the effects on other aspects of English learning;from the view of researchers,Phonics is mostly used by minority institutions and researchers, and is not put into use the class setting. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to confirm first whether Phonics can really improve the students' ability of word reading and spelling. Then, the study will further examine whether Phonics can spur the development of other aspects of English language proficiency,Simultaneously, pay attention to the changes of students'pronunciation. In this study,English language proficiency includes:word reading, spelling, reading fluency, pronunciation and comprehension. The study chooses 91 students who are in Grade seven, carrying out an experiment between experimental class and control one for two months to explore the effectiveness of Phonics. This thesis adopts SPSS 13.0 to analyze the data,Following the training of Phonics, the experimental group has better performance than the controlled group in word recognizing and spelling, proving the effectiveness of previous researches. Moreover, compared with the controlled group, the experimental group shows significant improvement in fluency and comprehension. The pronunciation also improved markedly. These results demonstrate the all-round effects of phonics training on various dimensions of language development.
