Language reflects the culture,while culture permeates the language.These two are inseparable from each other.Nowadays,with the coming of globalization,English learning is still popular in China.In the process of English learning,students would also know about British and American culture that accompanies the language learning.Adult students are usually the ones that are often overlooked group among many learners.However,with the further development of the concept of lifelong education,the study of adult learners’ learning becomes more and more significant.The author adopts a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research methods.The result is combination of plenty of literature study and the date analysis of the author’s own research.The purpose of this thesis is to explore the correlation between British-American cultural identity and English learning motivation of adults.Firstly,with the method of study review,the author reviewed the research status of cultural identity at home and abroad,the research on adult language learning motivation and the relationship between cultural identity and learning motivation,so as to understand the concept and current state of the very popular research.Secondly,the author collected the data concerning British-American cultural identity and language learning motivation of 180 adult students from the School of Continuing Education at Shanghai International Studies University through questionnaires and analyzed their relevancy.Finally,interviewing and telephoning interviews were conducted with six students who participated in the questionnaire to obtain information that might be overlooked in the questionnaire.Through the deep analysis of those method,this study draws the following conclusions:(1)The extent of adult’s student’s Britain-American cultural identity is moderate.They neither blindly adore Britain-American culture nor neglect the existence of Britain-American culture.(2)The overall English learning motivation of adult students is at a high level,in which the instrumental motivation is greater than the integrated motivation;(3)There is a significant positive correlation between Britain-American cultural identity and English learning motivation of adult students.In this study,quantitative and qualitative methods are combined to explore the relationship between British-American cultural identity and English learning motivation in adult students.To a certain extent,this paper can enrich adult English teaching theory and guide the adult English teaching practice.
