According to the Input and Output Hypothesis proposed by the language educators Stephen Krashen and Merrill Swain,a comprehensive and comprehensible input is quite necessary for an effective output in learning a language.English reading and writing is exactly in accordance with the relation between input and output.If the English learners are able to combine the reading and writing well enough,they will surely improve their comprehensive competence in language application.Nowadays,most of the domestic and foreign studies on English reading and writing are concentrated on the empirical researches.Moreover,most researches are focusing on college English reading and writing.This research mainly investigates the current situation of English Reading-based Writing teaching and its problems in five senior high schools of Luoyang.The following study is carried out by the connection of qualitative and quantitative methodology.330 students and 32 teachers from the five schools are randomly chosen as subjects in the questionnaire.12 English teachers are also interviewed and 4 English teachers are observed throughout in their Reading-based Writing classes.Based on the investigation,the research finds that 90% English teachers make use of Reading-based Writing.However,they pay more attention to reading rather than writing.75% students admit that they hardly know what to write about and how to write a composition.Besides,both students and teachers agree on the importance of reading and writing,but 70% students are unable to meet the extracurricular reading requirement prescribed by the New Senior High School English Curriculum Standard.What's more,the teachers do not provide enough guidance and practice about English reading and writing for their students.According to the investigation,composition model reciting is used as one of the most common techniques in the English writing teaching.Other techniques,such as Imitation and Adaptation based on the reading materials,are also commonly seen in the Reading-based Writing classes.According to the requirements of the New Senior High School English Curriculum Standard,the English teachers are suggested in the thesis to enrich teaching materials for Beading-based Writing and enhance their teaching methods.They are expected to make full use of modern techniques and multimedia materials.They should also provide more instructions about English reading and writing for their students together with supervisions and writing practice both in and out of class.The English teachers are supposed to combine reading and writing appropriately so as to develop the students' interests in English learning and improve the Reading-based Writing teaching efficiency in senior high schools.
