One of the major goals of English reading instruction in middle school is to improve students' reading ability.English reading instruction is regarded as a critical part of English instruction in junior middle school.This research focuses on analyzing excellent English teachers' reading classroom instruction.Five excellent English teachers who were awarded in The Twelfth English Teaching Exhibition of Young Teachers in Middle School are observed in this research.The author observes the teaching videos of the five excellent English teachers and takes down the reading tasks,teaching means,teaching methods and the time of interaction.Common characteristics in excellent teachers' English reading classroom instruction are found out in the research and suggestions for English teachers to improve their English reading instruction are offered.This study summarizes the characteristics of the five teachers' reading instructional activities from the perspectives of instructional tasks and activities in English reading classroom,teaching methods,teaching means,classroom input and output as well as some other aspects.1)Excellent English teachers' instructional activities share the characteristics of integrity,including pre-task phase,during-task phase and post-task phase.The teachers combine the use of tasks and xercises well so that students can focus on both form and meaning.2)Excellent English teachers relate classroom tasks with students' real-world experiences and abilities,which enables their classroom instruction to bear realistic significance.Students are able to solve real-life problems with the help of the excellent teachers' classroom tasks.The excellent English teachers offer the combination of roughly-tuned input and finely-tuned input.3)Students increase their language acquisition by intaking language input.During the process of reading,excellent English teachers decreasingly offer input and increasingly offer output to increase students' output in classroom.This is in accordance with the aim of language acquisition,which is to produce output by using target language.4)During the process of English reading classroom instruction,the Interactive Teaching Approach and the Situational Teaching Method are applied.Students are able to communicate with their teachers,the experts and their peers in English.5)Students are free to express their own opinions,which is helpful to their development.6)Multimedia and mind map are used to assist learning.Thus the students are more attentive so that the efficiency of classroom teaching can be improved with the help of the multimedia.The excellent English teachers control their classroom well,create pleasant teaching atmosphere and encourage critical thinking in their English reading instruction.
