With the continuous deepening of English teaching reform in our country,the importance of writing teaching in senior high school English teaching becomes more and more prominent.However,the assessment of writing affects the students' writing learning to a large extent.At present,the summative assessment method used in the teaching of high school English writing focuses on teachers' assessment.That is to say: it just pays more attention to scores.Yet students do not take part in the assessment.That is not consistent with the teaching idea of “Student-Centered” advocated by New Curriculum Reform.The formative assessment combines students' self-assessment,peer assessment and teacher assessment together,which makes students become valuators and the main body of assessment.It also pays attention to the assessment of the writing process.Therefore,the formative assessment accords with the requirements of English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017).Based on the humanistic theory,constructivism theory and cooperative learning theory,formative assessment is brought into senior high English writing teaching.The experiment was carried out in Liaocheng 2nd Senior High School in Shandong Province and lasted for 3 months.The subjects were randomly selected from two classes of Grade 1,in which Class 9 as the controlled class was taught with the traditional assessment method and Class 10 as the experimental class was taught with formative assessment.A questionnaire was used in the study to investigate the experimental students' writing attitude before and after the experiment.Meanwhile,pre-test paper and post-test paper were used to investigate students' performance on English writing achievement before and after the experiment.After collecting data,the results of the experiment were analyzed.The author used SPSS21.0 to do the independent T-test so that the following two questions could be answered: What are the impacts of formative assessment on improving the English writing interests and attitude of the high school students? What are the impacts of formative assessment on improving the English writing abilities of the high school students?The results of the experiment also show that compared with the traditional assessment method,formative assessment plays a positive role in terms of students' English writing interests,attitude,writing ability and so on.The result of the post-test shows that there is significance between experimental class and controlled class.Consequently,formative assessment can improve the achievement in English writing.
