Based on multi-level teaching, autonomous learning and teacher's mediation,by means of information retrieval, questionnaires and interview, the research is meant to explore the differentials of senior high school students' extracurricular autonomous English learning at multiple levels so as to provide specific and practical suggestions for teachers from different levels. The findings reveal that there indeed exist differences to some degree in students from different levels in motivation and significance of learning English autonomously after class as well as learning strategies, teacher's help and the four basic language skills. In general, the status quo of students at Level A is satisfactory from every aspect. Not only do they have strong motivations and intentions to learning English after class, but they also are adept to apply various learning strategies to improve their own learning efficiency.Besides, they are also good autonomous learners in developing their abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking.Students at Level B do not reach the researcher's expectations and need to be improved in numerous respects.First, they don't have strong intrinsic motivations to learning English autonomously after class. In other words, they are too utilitarian.Second, they don't attach enough importance to autonomous English learning and their learning enthusiasm cannot be maintained, either.Nor do they apply many learning strategies. Some students at Level C present a far more fulfilling situation than what has been expected.Since students at this level do not share the same English ability, the status quo of their autonomous learning turns out to be polarized. The investigation of teacher's mediation reveals that students at both Level A and Level C all consider it rather important for teachers to function as mediators ranging from building students' confidence to instructing students to use learning methods. However, although students at Level B affirm the function of teachers, the degree is lower than students at the other two levels. With the increasingly wide promotion of flipped class and micro-lesson as well as the coming reform in the College Entrance Exams, that English will be taught according to students' ability is a necessity and tendency.Although the classification of levels in the research is not based on English ability,it can still be referred to.
