20th century is the very century when English is developed in the range of whole globe as a second language and foreign language teaching. One of the remarkable features is that people are searching for a best teaching method to solve the problems of foreign language teaching. In the 20th century, numerous foreign language teaching methods emerge, however, all of those methods, including a communicative method which was most popular around 1980s ,have not reached a satisfying result. Thus,from 1990s,the main stream of language teaching does not consider "method" as a key element of language teaching. Because the methods ignore the fact that the learning process is conceived in the interactive activity with other people, and the language teaching environments such as culture ,politics and classroom are also ignored. It is under the main tendency the English curriculum standard formulated by our national education department takes a social constructivism as its theoretical foundation. This brandly new language teaching method classifies the different positions of teachers and students in the classroom. It points out the teacher is no longer the focus in the classroom and the role of teacher is transformed from a knowledge provider to a students'helper and instructor. "The standard" requires that the teacher utilize the theory of psychology and education ,study the law of language teaching, select and adjust a English language teaching method as well as utilize different teaching methods and skills according to the students' special psychological features and real conditions, Not only does the teacher need to know his teaching concept,but also needs to understand the influence of his words and deeds on the language teaching process in the classroom.Teachers must use proper words to guide, instruct ,control and feedback students'learning behavior, which can increase the students' cognitive level. Such a role that teacher plays is called mediation .Meanwhile,《the English syllabus》which is issued by the national education department states the objectives of English teaching for middle school students are to sharpen the students' learning strategies, to lay a foundation for real communication, to cultivate students' creative abilities as well as strengthen the global sense. The final objective is to make students become independent, autonomous ,high-efficient learner and to lay the good foundations of keeping continuous development for students . All of this depends on making full use of teachers' mediation.Under this background, the investigation of different genders and different English score levels of the students ranging from junior high school grade one to grade three and their responding teachers was made by the author. The aim is to know teachers'ideas and acts toward the mediation in their English teaching process as well as students'attitude toward the mediation of their English teachers. The findings of the investigation indicate that teachers'role as mediation in the concrete teaching process is insufficient, and mediation of the consciousness is not strong, the focus of the teaching process is still on knowledge of induction. However, students expect their teachers to help strengthen their confidence in English learning as well as to teach them to carry on learning strategies, and in the meantime they hope teachers can help them set up their learning target, so as to promote their socialized development. All of this shows that students have the desire and inclination to study by themselves, and hope get teachers'help. The purpose of English teacher's mediation is to help students develop their autonomous learning ability and therefore ,the author tries to establish a teaching method based on autonomous learning, which will benefit generation and construction of students'knowledge, make students realize their own values, and become a self-confident, self-respecting, independent, autonomous and successful learner by changing the role of teachers , founding atmosphere suitable for autonomous learning, taking task as vital point and developing students'autonomous learning ability.
