Area is the key to constructing two-dimensional space,and is the basis for learning geometry.For a long time in the teaching of area concepts and area measurement,many students can use the area formula to solve the problem,but they can not give a clear explanation of area,to explore the students’ understanding of area is particularly important for us.This study used a survey as well as interviews with Ganzhou grade 6 students to investigate their current comprehension of area.First,we need to prepare the questionnaire,and then analyses the answers of the students by specific,based on the answers and interviews with students,we use the SOLO theory for analysis.Through the students’ understanding of area,area formula and strategy of solving area problems,we can get the following conclusions:1.The students’ concept of area are diversity,and most of students can not give the definition of area.By analyzing the data more deeply,found that students are aware of the area is a "size",but the statement is not accurate or comprehensive enough.It is weak for many students to grasp the concept.2.There is an obvious difference between students’ actual performance of the formula derivation and their anticipated.When students were asked whether the area is needed to deduce the formula or certification procedure,most of them think that is necessary,but the data shows only a small number of students can write out the derivation of the area formula of a parallelogram.3.From student test,we found that students had a better performance of area computing in the rules graphics,primarily good at use the area formula.Student is not good at computing the area of irregular figures,they lack of strategy to solve the problem in real-life,and they lack of operation ability.When students use the formula to solve the problem they will confuse the area formula of different graphics.Most of students use formula-oriented strategy,their thought about area continuity is not good enough.In the end,based on the findings and conclusions of this study,the author put forward relevant suggestions for teaching and learning methods,and envisaged follow-up research project.
