With the advent of the 4G era, smart phones are required to support a wide range of wireless communication system, which increases the difficulty in the design of the mobile phone antenna and results in a great challenge to mobile phone antenna manufacturers. Meanwhile, with the development of the smart phones with metallization and lightweight, it is of great significance to research antennas to adapt to light and thin metal phone.Firstly, this paper describes the background and significance of the mobile phone antenna. We analyze three common built-in cell phone antenna, i.e., PIFA antenna, monopole antenna and loop antenna. And then we introduce some key indicators of the mobile phone antenna performances including the passive and the active parameters index.Secondly, a novel cell phone antenna based on the metal frame with a double fracture is proposed. By fully using three sections of the broken metal frame, the proposed antenna can cover two wide operating frequency bands of 824-960 MHz and 1710-2690 MHz. Besides, the prototype of the proposed antenna is manufactured and tested to verify its remarkable performances. The designed antenna, which has a good omnidirectional radiation characteristic, is able to adapt to the new generation of mobile devices in metal. Therefore, the proposed antenna has a strong practical value.Thirdly, a novel antenna, which can be applied for the cell phone with the fully enclosed metal frame, is proposed to cover the frequency bands of GSM850 / 900, DCS1800, PCS1900, UMTS2100, LTE700 / 2300/2500. Based on the theory of loop antenna, the proposed antenna without cutting the metal frame can meet the requirements of 4G communications.Finally, by utilizing the folded radiating arms, multi-radiating arms, coupling parasitic units and loading techniques of the matching network antenna technology, we design a broadband antenna with a compact size. The proposed antenna capable of covering two wide operating bands of 698-960 MHz and 1710-2690 MHz is fabricated and measured. Measured results show that the miniaturized and multi-band mobile phone antenna can be well used in LTE / WWAN system.
