Since the invention of the Ethernet technology,it has been nearly 40 years, but because of its simplicity, low cost, high scalability,as well as have a good support bursty traffic,it still glow with vitality. In recent years, demand for Ethernet services according to the explosion of growth,it makes the network operators, equipment manufacturers, and standardization organizations committed to extend this technology to metropolitan and wide area networks.Ethernet was originally designed for local area development, but because of its short small-scale networks and link length,so at the beginning, the Ethernet design does not establish a mechanism to manage and maintain. With respect to the LAN,MAN and WAN are rapidly expanding in the link length and size of the network, due to the lack of effective management and maintenance mechanism,MAN and WAN applications of traditional Ethernet technology are very much restricted. To solve this problem, standards organizations such as IEEE and ITU-T to vigorously promote the OAM(Operation,Administration,Maintenance)[2]standardization work mechanism.IEEE dot1ag proposed agreement mainly covers the connectivity fault management, and the ITU-T Y.1731 proposed agreement covers this two functional modules:the connectivity fault management and performance monitoring,Y.1731 is one of the most comprehensive agreement in existing Carrier Ethernet OAM standard protocols. This topic is based on a telecom company’s development projects of"Carrier Ethernet OAM",and developed form the project’s Y.1731 communication protocol. The author participated in the whole process of the project development, from the overall structure of the project and the outside of module design, writing detailed design documents, writing part of the module code, the external CLI and MIB write code to write system test documentation.By participating in the development of the project,The author carried on the thorough research to the agreement, has completed the design of carrier-grade Y.1731 protocol module, implementation, testing and maintenance on the level two terminal equipment in the company. This thesis first analyzes the background and the present situation of the development of Ethernet OAM protocol at home and abroad, analyzes various standards organizations to develop the case for Ethernet OAM mechanisms and improve standards.Secondly focuses on the Y.1731 agreement technology-related theories and key technologies, message formats of each unit modules and each packet forwarding process of Y.1731 protocols, and then studied the difficulties when Y.1731 Performance Monitoring protocol implementations encountered and presents one reliable solution(hardware assisted FPGA).Finally, testing the realization of module performance and analyzed the test results in accordance with the design of test scenarios.
