A great variety of random disruptions happen frequently in production system, which may render the initial schedule outmoded. Therefore, disruption management has been widely used in the field of production scheduling as one method and theory about how to reduce the negative effects caused by disruptions. With the development of science and technology, especially telecommunication and transportation, the cost of outsourcing has been getting lower and lower, and many processing enterprises attempt to increase productivity with outsourcing. This paper tries to deal with the disruptions by outsourcing some jobs to a third party, which is different from the existing researches. In practice, putting off part of processing tasks from one production cycle to the next one will bring economic losses, and so many enterprises reserve some of the processing capability subject to random disruptions, which results in a great waste of resources inevitably. This study considers a single machine system with a given available machining time capacity, and explores new method for disruption management with outsourcing. The main contents are as follows:(1) When the disruption is predictable, three different disruption measures about completion time are proposed:virtual earliness, virtual tardiness, and both of them are contained. At the same time, in order to consider the total completion time and cost caused by outsourcing, three predictive disruption management model are build up. At last, we propose an optimal algorithm based on dynamic programming, or a hybrid algorithm of heuristic and neighborhood search algorithm.(2) If the probability distributions of machine failure and repair time are known, we design flexibility measures, which estimate the ability of the jobs to absorb disruptions. And then optimize the measures with intelligent algorithm. When disruption happens, minimizing match-up time is adopted. And computational study shows the idea is very efficient in preparing initial schedule for minimizing match-up time rescheduling when disruption measures of cost and time are considered. This paper studies single machine disruption management with outsourcing, enriches the research of this area in theory, and improves enterprises'performance in practice.
