Energy is essential for development. Wherever it is present, it allows societies to thrive and enhances the living standards. In a world where energy demand keeps growing exponentially, acting responsibly towards it seems a dutiful obligation to allow everyone to have access to it. As an access to energy company, TOTAL SA, one of the biggest international oil companies, is fully aware of the consequences of its activities on the environment and society and has committed to be proactive and make every effort to limit the effects while keeping delivering better energy. As more companies and organizations start to analyze and experiment the “Net positive Approach”, we ought to think that this approach could bring a constructive framework to address the double issue cited above, as a means to support TOTAL's motto” Committed To Better Energy” and sustainable development strategy. The goal of this report is to present the premises of a study conducted within the Sustainable Development and Environment Division of TOTAL to analyze more in depth the Net Positive approach, its strengths and opportunities. First, several concepts related to the Net Positive approach were defined to compare them and conclude on which one is more suitable. Then, an extensive analysis of the Net Positive approach was conducted to determine its specifications, from its principles to its way of deployment within an organization. This part of the study is very generic and can be used by any institution to better assess the concept.Thereafter, an internal and external benchmarking study was carried out, to examine the good practices related to NPA done in house and in other companies. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are proposed for further NPA studies.
